In mid-May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed an outbreak of a specific variety of Ebola disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since then, the disease has spread to Uganda, which neighbors the DRC in central Africa. Ebola is caused by different viruses. This outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which historically has a fatality rate averaging 40%. Although there is no vaccine or cure, early supportive care is lifesaving.
